Out With The Old, And In With The Brew! Are Puns Bad? They Are? Huh.

without comments

Ah, New Year’s Eve. Nothing says “binge drink” and “horrific morning-after regrets” like some completely arbitrary twist of the calendar. Really, the second most important holy day for Xtians is but a week past, and all that yielded was some polite conversation and perhaps one-too-many whiskey sours for Uncle Ted. A few days later we have a holiday that celebrates literally nothing and people the world over find excuses to pour grain alcohol all over themselves and blow shit up. Now, I’m not saying I disagree, just that I find it all rather amusing 🙂

So let’s hop on the bandwagon. It’s time to cram ourselves full of decent food, good champagne, and even better beer, then head to the vomitorium, deep-throat an ostrich feather, and start all over again. Hedonism never hurt no one, so long as you remember to drink responsibly between purges.

GIS for “drink responsibly.” I literally could not do this job without ironic Google Image Searches.
All Hail Sergey Brin.

So, cheers to you guys, wherever tonight may find you. Just remember that the New Year is really just more of the same; the world won’t change because a digit rolled over in the calendar date (here that, 2012 folk?). In particular, I advise everyone to stay clear of gyms and avoid buying RRSP Investments at the same time everyone else is (contribute now, but convert from cash to stock in the spring–also reconsider taking investment advice from a blog about bloody beer, you moron).

If you really must make a resolution, try to make it beer themed, but hilarity-themed is also acceptable. I recommend things like vowing to attempt less papal assassinations, especially if the people around you don’t know you that well.

On a parting note, Nigel’s 200th beer list has inspired me to create one for my NYE party. Sure, it’s not as sweet/awesome as his, but it’s not too shabby either.

Beer. It’s what I’m drinking. No you can’t have any. OK, maybe one.

Donnelly Group Pub: New Oxford

with one comment

If you know me, you also know that the Donnelly Group is not exactly my favourite chain of pubs. They have a talent for stamping out virtually identical, near-dance-club-like, soulless booze holes. So, whatever, we go our separate ways. I walk straight past the line-up outside The Lamplighter of shrieking mini-skirts and popped collars looking for someone to fight (waiting to pay $10 cover), and enjoy myself a solid pint at the Alibi. I’m not their target demographic, after-all. Those folks can keep the Canadian (or, if they’re feeling fancy, Stella).

And it’s not just the Lamplighter. Their list of crimes against good beer culture is actually rather impressive:

  • Smiley’s Public House
  • Metropole
  • Lamplighter
  • Cinema Public House
  • The Calling
  • The Academic

All serving up a nearly identical and uninspiring mix of GIB’s finest light ales & lagers, Bud, Stella, Molson, and the usual suspects for bad euro imports (plus oddly enough, Delirium Tremens, so I guess there’s that).

So when Donnelly announced a new pub in Yaletown–the very heart & home of the tiny-skirted-stripped-shirt crowd–I figured it’d be yet another cookie-cutter frat cave. Then Ian from Driftwood let drop that Farmhand will be on tap there. Then I caught a glimpse of a freakin’ shuffleboard table in a preview pic.

The beer list is likewise unexpected: 2 Phillips taps in addition to Farmhand. The bottle list features such names as Pike, Deschutes, Anchor, Dogfish Head, Acme, 4x Unibroue, and St Ambroise.

I haven’t been down yet, so I can’t say how it looks in person, or if they’ll find some way to bollocks this up, but I’m holding out hope for the place. The next time I get thirsty in Yaletown I’ll pop in and render a verdict. Note that I basically live in Yaletown and am thirsty all the time, so I’ll see you guys soon.

Onwards to 200!

without comments

For those that don’t know, every time Nigel at The Alibi Room changes up his tap list, he increases the number on the menu. Since this happens fairly often, the number tends goes up rapidly.

When the number hit 100 early last year, Nigel celebrated by putting together an outstanding selection of BC-based beer, along with a fantastic little booklet describing each offering, and often the person behind it.

Nothing says more about the increased popularity of good beer (and thus the Alibi) than the simple fact that it took four years to reach #100, but that we’re on track to hit #200 not even 12 months later.

Nigel has pre-announced that #200 will occur this December 22nd; opening is 5pm. I absolutely plan on being there.

Until there, here’s a treat from the evening that saw #100. (Click to download)

Just looking at this makes me thirsty.
