The BC LCLB Speaks!

with 2 comments

I just received this little note in response to my rantish letter a few weeks back about Bring Your Own Wine:

Thank you for your follow up email. Minister Coleman has requested that this branch, the Liquor Control and Licensing Branch respond on his behalf.

There is a lot of legal, policy and committee work involved in changing legislation. When bring your own wine was being contemplated government had been extensively lobbied for bring your own wine, with very little call being made for bring your own beer from either restaurant associations, the public or business. This is still the case. There is no plan to allow bring your own beer.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to write back to this address or to call our Help Desk, toll-free, at 1-866-209-2111.

Now, before y’all get worked up into a tizzy over this, I should say that I like this answer. Well, at least I like it a lot more than the previous one, which frankly was both baffling and insulting.

This answer, on the other hand, makes sense. It plainly outlines a reason for not including beer in the legislation, and as sucky as that reason might be, it is logical. Why wasn’t beer included? The answer is right there: the beer lobby wasn’t loud enough, and a quiet lobby isn’t worth spit in politics. That’s just the name of the game.

However, this letter cuts both ways. Now that we know why beer was left out, we also know how to fix that and get beer included. If we want craft beer to be taken seriously in this province, we need to get organized and get loud. We kinda suspected it before, but now we have it in writing.

Bring Your Own… Box?

with 3 comments

When I received the LDB’s form letter response to us craft beer nerds’ request to include our favourite amber ambrosia in the Bring Your Own Bottle initiative (read it here if you haven’t), I put it down as a symptom of the “wine is better than beer” culture that pervades… well… pretty much everyone. To them, great craft beer can never be as good as a great wine, and they don’t want to pollute fine dining establishments with the swarms of yahoos that will, no doubt, flood in with six packs of Coors Light Iced Tea should they have added “beer” to this legislation.

However, I had no idea just how far they’re willing to take this wine-over-beer mentality. The LCLB recently issued a policy directive, updating the interested parties around the province on how they’d like this new law to be observed. Nothing weird there, policy directives are pretty standard practise from the LCLB because the underlying law is just too complex and poorly written for any person to read and remain sane.

For anyone curious, here is that policy.

For anyone too lazy to read that 1.5 page document, it lays out some of the more mundane details around letting folk waltz into your restaurant with their own wine. How to serve it, how to recork it, and that boxed wine doesn’t need to be recorked.

Yes, that’s right. Boxed wine. Let me say that again so it really sinks in: Boxed Wine. Boxed. Wine. Roll it around your mouth just to get a good feel for it. Wine. Box. Boxed. Wine. BoxedWine.

Yeah, beer has to be kept at the gates because it’s not as good as a fine wine, but that 3L box of pure grape goodness known as “Toscano Rosso“? Bring in it, dear sir, but I’m afraid you’ll have to leave that bottle of Central City Thor’s Hammer at home! Why? Because we have standards, my good man!

Again, you heard it straight from the LCLB my friends: Fuck beer.

More Beer, Less Guilt

without comments

Now here’s an intriguing idea: it seems some bloke down in Portland has decided to set up a charity. Of course, this being Portland, he decided to make his charity a bar that brews and serves great beer.

Yup, it’s a non-profit brewpub that’s powered by contributions of local tradesfolk and volunteers. I knew that someday all my beer drinking could be made into a noble cause!

So, who’s with me? Let’s do this here!
